President Donald Trump recently declined to comment on whether the United States would prevent China from taking Taiwan by force, stating, "I never comment on that." Trump has aligned his administration with the longstanding U.S. policy of "strategic ambiguity," which aims to deter Chinese aggression without explicitly committing to Taiwan's defense. Trump emphasized his intention to maintain good relations with China, including cross-border investments, even with previous tariff implementations.
This ambiguity has raised concerns about Taiwan's future security. While the U.S. continues to provide Taiwan with defensive arms under the Taiwan Relations Act, the lack of a clear commitment to military intervention may strengthen Beijing's aggressiveness toward the island. On the other hand, definite support could provoke China, escalating tensions in the region.
